Tennessee Students Are Playing Toward Something Bigger at CyberCon 2026
This weekend, students from across Tennessee will gather at Cumberland University for the CyberCon Invitational Tennessee High School Esports Championship, an event that reflects something much larger than competition alone.
It reflects where education is headed.
Across Tennessee, school districts, educators, coaches, and community leaders are beginning to recognize what many students already know: esports is no longer just about gaming. It is becoming a powerful connector to career exploration, technical skills, leadership development, communication, collaboration, and future workforce pathways.
One district helping lead that momentum in Tennessee is Williamson County Schools.
Through initiatives like CyberCon, students are being given opportunities to explore technology, cybersecurity, digital media, esports, and emerging career fields in ways that feel authentic, engaging, and future focused. Events like this demonstrate what can happen when schools intentionally connect student interests to meaningful learning experiences.
The Tennessee Academic Esports League, or TAEL, is honored to be part of this year's event.
As part of the event, Dr. Katrina Lewis will facilitate a parent session focused on esports and career pathways, helping families better understand how competitive gaming environments can connect to Tennessee Career & Technical Education pathways, college opportunities, scholarships, and future workforce skills.
Introducing "Play to Pathways"
Play to Pathways
Esports becomes the door. The pathway is what comes next.
At CyberCon 2026, TAEL is officially launching its new statewide tagline:
Play to Pathways
More than a slogan, Play to Pathways reflects the evolution of esports across Tennessee schools.
For years, esports conversations often stopped at competition. Today, the conversation is expanding into something far more meaningful:
Students who enter esports programs frequently discover skills and career interests they never expected to explore. Some become broadcasters. Some learn networking and IT infrastructure. Others dive into graphic design, social media management, coding, production, entrepreneurship, or engineering concepts.
TAEL is projected to nearly double in size by Fall 2026.
That growth reflects a broader shift happening across Tennessee as more schools explore how esports can support student engagement, attendance, belonging, workforce readiness, and Career & Technical Education alignment.
Students are increasingly looking for learning environments connected to authentic interests and future careers. Schools are searching for ways to engage students through collaboration, technology, and applied learning. Employers continue emphasizing communication, teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, and digital fluency as essential workforce skills.
Esports naturally intersects with all of those areas.
Tennessee is uniquely positioned to become a national leader in this space because districts across the state are beginning to approach esports not simply as recreation, but as a connected educational ecosystem tied to pathways, professions, and purpose.
Why Events Like CyberCon Matter
CyberCon creates opportunities for students to compete, connect with peers statewide, explore colleges and scholarships, meet industry and university representatives, learn about cybersecurity and technology careers, experience large-scale event production, and see how esports connects to future opportunities.
For students, this is bigger than a tournament.
It is a chance to see how their interests, talents, and passions can connect to college, careers, leadership, and future pathways.
Just as importantly, CyberCon creates opportunities for parents and educators to better understand the rapidly evolving landscape surrounding esports in education.
Because the future of esports in schools is not just about who wins tournaments.
It is about helping students discover where their interests can lead.
And across Tennessee, more students are beginning to realize they may already be on a pathway they never knew existed.
