40 Coaches, 3 Big Days, and 1 Bold Season Ahead: TAEL Unlocked and the First Esports Coach Academy

July was a turning point for scholastic esports in Tennessee. Across 3 big days, 40 coaches from across the state joined the TAEL admin team and our 2026-2027 partners for the TAEL Unlocked webinar, and then a room full of educators spent 2 days in Franklin becoming the very first NAECAD Level 1 Certified esports coaches in Tennessee. TAEL Unlocked: Your Guide to the 2026-2027 Season

On July 15, coaches, administrators, and partners came together for TAEL Unlocked, our biggest preseason briefing yet. This season, TAEL is expanding across every grade band, and every student, from their first elementary matchup to a high school championship run, will be building workforce skills through our new Play to Pathways™ curriculum alongside the social-emotional growth, team building, and competitive skills that make scholastic esports so powerful. There's a place for every Tennessee student, and a pathway waiting for each of them.

None of this season happens without the partners who showed up on that call, and we want to thank each of them for standing with Tennessee students:

• Stay Plugged In: a free recruiting platform for our student-athletes that has helped facilitate over $50 million in scholarships nationwide
• NAECAD (National Association of Esports Coaches and Directors): bringing Level 1 Esports Coach Certification to Tennessee educators

Coaches also got a first look at season structure options for 2026-2027, and member schools learned about free Nintendo game codes available right now through the Coaches Portal.

The TAEL/WCS Esports Coach Academy: 12 Hours That Change Programs

Then on July 23 and 24, we did something Tennessee scholastic esports has never done before. Coaches from districts across the state gathered at the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center in Franklin for the first TAEL/WCS Esports Coach Academy, covering NAECAD Level 1 Certification, 2026-2027 season planning, and building sustainable, student-centered programs aligned with CTE pathways and workforce development. Every coach walked away with 12 professional development hours for the 2 days, on top of the certification itself.

The academy is also where this season took its final shape: coaches worked through the 2026-2027 season structure together and locked it in, and the full season plan launches this week. When we say TAEL is educator-led, this is what we mean; the people coaching your students are the ones who built the calendar they'll compete on.

A huge thank you to Eric Harvey, Williamson County Schools STEM Director, for hosting and presenting, and an enormous shout-out to Connor Alne, Executive Director of NAECAD, who traveled from Kansas City to the Williamson County Innovation Center to lead our coaches through certification in person. That is what national partnership looks like.

So what does NAECAD certification actually mean? NAECAD is the National Association of Esports Coaches and Directors, the national standard-bearer for esports coaching. Level 1 certification means these educators have been trained in the fundamentals of running a student-centered esports program: practice planning, VOD review, team management, and the coaching philosophy that treats esports as a vehicle for leadership, academics, and career readiness rather than just game time.
